Description

Antenna Engineer, Antennas and Sub-millimetre Waves Section, RF Payloads and Technology Division, Electrical Department, Directorate of Technology, Engineering and Quality.

The Antennas and Sub-millimetre Waves Section provides functional support to ESA projects and carries out technological research (R&D) in the field(s) of space antenna systems, submillimetre wave instruments and associated technologies.

This post will be primarily assigned to provide support to the ESA Programme related to EU Secure Connectivity as Antenna Engineer.

The European Union Secure Connectivity Programme aims to deploy an EU satellite constellation, also referred to as IRIS² (Infrastructure for Resilience, Interconnectivity and Security by Satellite). With IRIS², the European Union will provide for a Union satellite-based, multi-orbital communication infrastructure for governmental use, while integrating and complementing existing and future national and European capacities.

Duties

Reporting to both the Head of the Antennas and Sub-millimetre Waves Section and to the person in charge of the Secure Connectivity Space Segment, within the technical fields described above, your main tasks and responsibilities will include:

  • providing support as Antenna Engineer for the Secure Connectivity Space Segment, including, in particular:
    • supporting the procurement of the antenna subsystems of the communication payload, with particular emphasis on the active antennas for the communication payload:managing and controlling antenna requirements, in particular for the active antennas;
      • monitoring and controlling antenna performance allocation and budgeting;
      • participating in the antenna procurement process;
      • monitoring antenna development (design, implementation and verification/testing);
      • following up the qualification and acceptance verification activities, while also identifying the necessary breadboarding and model-philosophy approach;
      • assessing antenna performance during all project phases;
      • interacting with ESA specialists, as necessary for the payload and antenna complete development.
    • supporting associated project management, risk, quality and reporting tasks:
      • participating in project reviews;
      • participating in proposals, change request evaluations and negotiations;
      • technical and programmatic risk identification and assessment;
      • requirements deviations and non-conformance assessment and follow-up;
      • development schedule assessment;
      • reporting input provision.
    • supporting the general activities of the Section:
      • providing expert technical support and consultancy to ESA projects, programmes and general studies in the field of space antenna systems, with particular emphasis on active antennas, submillimetre wave instruments and associated technologies throughout all project phases;
      • supporting the definition of technological requirements of future space antenna systems, including active antennas, in cooperation with ESA specialists in the different domains;
      • participating in feasibility studies, project reviews and the evaluation of procurement proposals;
      • identifying critical development problems and assisting in their resolution;
      • defining, initiating and managing R&D activities covering both long- and short-term needs related to space antennas, in particular for active antennas;
      • contributing to the definition of technology development requirements and work plans for the Agency's technology programmes;
      • fostering new application areas for multidisciplinary activities, placing emphasis on innovative concepts, cutting-edge technologies and system architectures;
      • supporting laboratory activities as required;
      • monitoring applicable scientific and technological trends and maintaining state-of-the-art expertise;
      • contributing to the dissemination of the results of the activities performed and the transfer of knowledge across the Agency.

Technical competencies

General background and specific experience in the technical domains covered by the position

Experience in the management and monitoring of industrial activities, including participation in reviews

Understanding of related technologies, R&D trends and the industrial landscape

Experience with the design, development and application of relevant tools and methods

Experience in the development and verification of space hardware

Project support experience in a relevant domain

Experience in the preparation of procurement activities for technology development and innovation (Statements of Work, proposal evaluation, etc.)

Education

A master's degree in telecommunications or electrical/RF/microwave engineering with a comprehensive background in electromagnetic wave theory is required for this post.

Additional requirements

Very good understanding of communication antennas/payloads, including the specification and evaluation of functionality, architectures and key performance parameters is required.

Solid, hands-on experience on antennas for telecom payloads, integrated into a project/procurement environment is required.

A very good knowledge of multibeam antennas and architectures, including beam forming, radiating elements and critical technologies for RF payloads will be considered an asset.

Solid industrial experience in antenna and submillimetre wave architectures and technologies as applied to aerospace programmes is an asset.

The working languages of the Agency are English and French. A good knowledge of one of these is required. Knowledge of another Member State language would be an asset.

Applicants must be eligible to access technology and hardware which is subject to European and US export control regulations.

Applicants must be eligible for security clearance by their national security administrations.
